DRESS, APPEARANCE, AND PERSONAL PROPERTY

  1. Principals have the authority to impose dress requirements designed to support the educational responsibilities of the school and/or to contribute to a safe and orderly environment. Examples would include the banning of items worn to depict gangs (hats, bandannas, sweatbands, caps, visors, etc.), clothing that may conceal weapons or other illegal items, such as drugs (outerwear jackets, etc.), and items that may be used as weapons (metal belts, spiked collars, chains attached to wallets/keys, etc.). Students may be required to keep these items in a locker or other clothing storage areas during the school day. Individual teachers, with the approval of the Principal, shall have the specific authority to make additional modifications to further teaching and learning in their classrooms.

  2. Students have the responsibility to dress and groom themselves in a manner that is safe, healthy, and non-disruptive to classroom and school. Students are prohibited from wearing clothing that is unduly revealing (e.g. tops cut low at the neck or under the arms, T-shirt or blouse straps that are less than one inch wide, tops that expose bare midriff, pants worn below the hips exposing the student’s underwear or skin or shorts/skirts cut high on the legs). Students may not wear pajamas, bedroom slippers, or any other sleepwear. Footwear must be worn at all times. Bare feet will not be allowed. In addition, students may not wear sunglasses or headgear of any kind, i.e., hats, headbands, bandanas, sweatbands, etc. Face painting is prohibited.

  3. Public display of affection is unacceptable behavior and will result in a warning, then a call home.

  4. Students are responsible for their personal property on the bus, in school, and during school activities. Due to the risk of loss or theft, students may not bring electronic equipment, such as radios, cassette/CD players, iPods, cameras, camcorders, computerized games or similar items, to school. School staff will not be responsible for searching for lost or stolen items.

  5. Playing or use of electronic equipment, such as radios, cassette/CD players, iPods, cameras, camcorders, computerized games or similar items, during school hours is prohibited. Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary measures. These items may also be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the school day or to the parent/guardian.

  6. Audio or video taping without prior approval is a violation of personal rights and is a violation of Maryland State law.

  7. Use of personal laptop computers on school property is prohibited.

  8. Riding/use of skateboards, scooters, and roller blades on school property is prohibited. Skateboards, scooters, and roller blades will be confiscated and taken to the school office and may be retrieved only by a parent/guardian of the student.
