Accounting I 332040 Grades 10-12
Students develop the ability to analyze and record business transactions on the basis of accepted principles of accounting.  The course includes basic accounting theory, the use of journals and ledgers, preparation of financial statements, taxes and payrolls, and information on careers in accounting.  Computerized Accounting will be introduced.
Students who successfully complete Accounting I with an A will earn 3 credits from FCC (BU 100 – Business Accounting).

 

Accounting II 333041 (Prerequisite:  Accounting I) Grades 10-12
This course includes accounting control systems, the relationship between automated and manual processing of accounting data, and information careers in accounting.  Emphasis is on the interpretation and managerial use of accounting records.

 

Advanced Placement Computer Science 343011 (Prerequisite:  Programming and Computer Concepts) Grades 10-12
This course enables students to earn college credit by providing preparation for the Advanced Placement Computer Science test.  Students program in JAVA. 
This course qualifies for an Advanced Technology credit.

 

Applied Business Law 333280 Grades 11-12
This course provides an in-depth study of sales contracts, credit, warranties, employment contracts, and commercial paper.  Business Law provides knowledge of the history of law, as well as an up-to-date knowledge of rights and obligations.  Topics include torts, crimes, contracts, bailments, and insurance as they apply to business organizations.  Selected activities, such as mock trials, may be included to enhance understanding of courtroom procedures.

 

Communications and Networking (CAN) 344040 Grades 10-12
Students will learn to design computer networks and will install network components along with both management and application software.  Students will study the function of networking and telecommunication devices.  
This course qualifies for an Advanced Technology credit.

 

Computers and Technology (CAT) [.5] 344050 Grades 9-12
This is a one-term course giving students a working knowledge of operating systems and computer network architectures.  Students will develop computer science skills to enable them to select and use appropriate technology tools for problem solving and resolution of real world computing problems.  Students will demonstrate proficiency in the use of integrated software packages.  Students will develop collaborative work skills and explore a variety of multimedia applications (CD-ROM, sound, graphics, video).

 

International Business and Finance 332010 Grades 10-12
Students will develop an understanding of international business at it relates to their personal lives, Frederick Country, Maryland, and the US.  Up-to-date information on global economic trends, exploration of traditions, customs, and practices of foreign countries will be discussed.  In addition, students will analyze and examine international finance and monetary systems, review current economic issues, and measure international business activities among countries.

 

Introduction to Business 331010 Grades 9-10
Students with an interest in business acquire practical skills through a general study of banking service, checking accounts, budgeting, credit, insurance, investments, communications, consumer economics, computers, and technology.  This course familiarizes students with content included in other business courses such as business law, management, and accounting.

 

Introduction to Programming 341040 Grades 9-12
This is a one-credit course that provides an introduction to the elementary concepts of computer programming.  Successful completion of this course will prepare students to enter the Programming and Computer Concepts class.  Students should be enrolled in an Algebra I or higher mathematics class.

 

Keyboarding I 331020 Grades 9-12
Students will learn and refine the efficient operation of they keyboard through the use of touch typing.  Applications include letters, envelopes, memos, tables, manuscripts, and bibliographies.  Students will be using industry standard software.  
This life-long skill is recommended for all students prior to graduation.
 

 

Keyboarding II 332020 (Prerequisite:  Keyboarding I) Grades 10-12
Students will refine and enhance competencies developed in Keyboarding I.  Students will gain employment skills in document production, composition, office procedures, keyboarding speed, and accuracy.  Emphasis will be placed on solving contemporary office applications.  Student will be using industry standard software.

 

Keyboarding III 333021 (Prerequisite:  Keyboarding II) Grades 11-12
Students will further refine competencies and develop employability skills in preparing manuscripts, correspondence, and business forms.  Students will complete activities using industry-oriented packages in executive secretary, insurance, legal secretary, medical secretary, and government.  Students will be using industry standard software.

 

Management and Entrepreneurship 333090 Grades 11-12
This is a course for students interested in managerial careers or in owning their own business.  This course promotes career development that will improve employment opportunities as a manager, owner, or employee.  Topics include:  types of business ownership, creating a business plan, management functions, manager/entrepreneur responsibilities, and career information.  Activities will be used to develop skills in decision making, leadership, stress management, communication, marketing, finance, and selecting and managing employees.

 

Managing Your Personal Finances [.5] 336040 Grades 9-12
This is a nine-week course designed to help students discover new ways to maximize earning potential, develop strategies for managing resources, explore skills for the wise use of credit, and gain insight into the different ways of investing money.  This course includes maintaining a checking account through paper and software applications, designing a personal investment strategy, and creating an electronic portfolio.  This course will focus on personal finances dealing with insurance, credit, and debit cards as well as risk management.

 

Microsoft Certification Training I 335111 (Recommended Prerequisite:  Keyboarding I) Grades 10-12
Students will develop skills to utilize word processing and spreadsheets applications.  Industry standard software package used in this course is Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).  Students taking this course will be given the opportunity to sit for the MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) Proficiency Access and PowerPoint Certification Exams.

Students will develop the skills to utilize database, desktop information management, and multimedia applications.  Industry standard software package used in this course is Microsoft Office, (Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint).  Students taking this course will be given the opportunity to sit for the MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) Proficiency Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint Certification Exams.

Students who successfully complete MCT I and MCT II with an A or B will earn 3 credits from FCC (COS 114  – Business Software Applications).

Students will develop the skills to utilize advanced word and spreadsheet applications.  Industry standard software package used in this course is Microsoft Office, (Word and Excel).  Students taking this course will be given the opportunity to sit for the MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) Expert Word and Excel Certification Exams.  This course prepares students for a wide variety of career opportunities.

Students who successfully complete MCT I and MCT III with an A or B will earn 6 credits from FCC (COS 111E  – Microcomputer Applications:  Spreadsheets AND COS 107 – Word Processing).

This is a nine-week course designed to help students develop touch key skills. In addition, all aspects of a term paper, personal resumes, letters, formats, and proofreading skills will be introduced.

 

Programming and Computer Concepts 341010 (Recommended Prerequisite:  CAT) Grades 10-12
This course surveys computer science topics including: numerical and symbolic representation, operating systems, programming languages, computer architecture, ethical and professional issues, information retrieval, artificial intelligence, design of solutions to abstract problems. 
This course qualifies for an Advanced Technology credit.
Students who successfully complete Programming and Computer Concepts and CAT with an A or B earn 3 college credits at FCC (CIS 101:  Introduction to Computers and Information Processing).

 

Web Site Development 344030 Grades 10-12
Through the incorporation of key concepts, students will develop and apply techniques for creating, acquiring, and editing animation, sound files, and video files to be used on a web page.  There will be a strong focus on the elements of a design, determining the audience, and choosing the appropriate software tools to develop a web site.
