Last month my advanced Computer Graphics
students participated in a water bottle label design contest organized
by the Graphics Communication & Printing Technology program at the
Career and Technology Center. The contest was an effort, in part, to
highlight for students the importance of collaboration between the
graphic design industry and the printing industry and give students a
real world design experience. There were 3 contest levels, Middle
School, High School and FCC (1 winner per level). This Saturday at a
reception at corporate sponsor Hub Labels, Inc. in Hagerstown, the
winners were announced. Walkersville's Lily Johnson-Ulrich was the High
School level winner! She will receive a $500 dollar scholarship applied
to a degree in a graphics related field, television and news coverage,
and 1 case of 16.9oz. water bottles with her printed design. All
participants had their designs on display this weekend and students
were able to see Lily's award-winning label design printed by the
professionals at Hub label. You will soon be able to see Lily's
winning design along with all of my students designs on display in the
case outside the drawing and painting room 183.
